Pioneering
research work at Nottingham Trent University by
Professor Stephen Gray has led to the development
of body-scanning booths, which generate accurate
3D images of body shapes using 2D digital photographic
data. Originally, there were two reasons behind
the development of this technology: to monitor
the ever-changing body shape of the British public
- and help clothing manufacturers to generate
more representative standard clothing sizes -
and to provide individual consumers with detailed
data about their body shape, thereby making it
easier for them to buy clothes without trying
them on - particularly via websites - and be confident
that they would fit properly when they arrived.
The retail industry is slowly warming to the idea
of installing body-scanning booths in retail outlets,
and touring programmes have generated an enormous
amount of data about the national body shape.
